Solidarity with Ukraine: supporting the integration of refugees in Moldova
For more than four years, Fondation de France has been taking action, in the face of an ongoing war, to support people affected by the fighting, whether they have been displaced within the country or have sought refuge in neighbouring countries. Whilst the humanitarian crisis remains very much a reality, the challenge is also to promote the integration of refugees in their host countries.
Moldova is the country which, relative to its population, has taken in the largest number of Ukrainians who have fled the war (nearly 140,000 refugees). The resurgence of fighting in Ukraine continues to bring in a steady influx of refugees. Many settle there permanently, contribute to the local economy and establish themselves as part of the local community. However, uncertainties about their future, the gradual closure of accommodation centres, difficulties in finding a place to live, and the reduction in the support measures put in place at the start of the war are making their integration more difficult. In this context, the Fondation de France supports local organisations that assist refugees whilst promoting social cohesion. Let’s take a closer look at two of them.
Encouraging interaction between refugees and local residents
In Chisinau, the reception centre run by Moldova for Peace, with the support of the Fondation de France, is open to both Ukrainian refugees and Moldovans. The centre offers language courses, as well as cookery, sewing, dance and writing workshops, alongside legal and career support.
Designed as a participatory community space, anyone can suggest an activity or get involved in those organised by others. It is also a valuable place for children to socialise, as many continue their Ukrainian schooling remotely. By bringing people together on a daily basis, this venue helps to forge lasting bonds between refugees and the Moldovan population.
“With the support of Fondation de France, the centre can continue to be a true hub for the community: Ukrainian refugees and members of the Moldovan host communities come here not only to receive aid, but also to forge links, regain their dignity and develop a sense of belonging,” explains Ion Brinzilla, coordinator at Moldova for Peace.
Natalia Rahmistriuc, centre manager, confirms: “Every day, we see that social cohesion is not built through a single event or a single service, but through continuity, trust and a lasting presence. The support from Fondation de France enables us to keep this vibrant space open: a place where anyone can come, meet other people, ask for help, offer help in turn, and feel that they are not alone. It’s like a second home!”.
Supporting the most vulnerable people
Fondation de France also supports Motivatie, a charity set up and run by people with disabilities. Since the start of the war, it has been supporting Ukrainian refugees with disabilities and their families, who face particular difficulties in accessing healthcare and dealing with cumbersome administrative procedures.
With the gradual closure of accommodation centres and the reduction in financial support, needs remain significant. The charity provides social and legal support, distributes essential items and organises activities to encourage interaction between Ukrainian refugees and Moldovan residents. It also works with local authorities to raise awareness and improve the accessibility of reception facilities and services.
