These regions are among those on the Asian continent most at risk from natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, flash floods and flooding. These extreme events are becoming more frequent and intense as a result of global warming (accelerated glacier melt, heavier monsoon rains and episodes of extreme heat).

The disaster occurred a few tens of kilometres from the region that had been hit by violent earthquakes in 2015. Since these events, the Fondation de France has been providing aid to the victims in close collaboration with Nepalese organisations and French NGOs. In partnership with theNGO Federation of Nepal (NFN), it has, for example, been supporting local authorities and organisations with capacity-building since 2016, so that they can respond immediately to disasters affecting them (the Jajarkot earthquake in 2023, floods in the west of the country in 2021 and in the Kathmandu Valley in 2024).

Discussions are already under way with the NFN to provide emergency support to those affected in the areas devastated by the mudslides, through the mobilisation of local organisations (providing shelter, meals and water, social support, etc.), pending further discussions on the terms of a more comprehensive recovery effort, in coordination with the Nepalese government and local authorities.
