Expertise in philanthropy without borders
Today's crises are undeniably global, from climate change and migration to human rights violations and threats to the principle of democracy. To tackle them effectively, the Fondation de France has chosen to work in collaboration with its European and international partners.
For decades, Fondation de France has been developing its expertise to offer unique support to organisations wishing to extend their fundraising efforts internationally.
A pioneer in the promotion of cross-border philanthropy, it brings together all stakeholders - donors, founders, volunteers and project leaders - wishing to act in the public interest. Over the years, Fondation de France has developed a solid network of international partners. As a result it is recognised as a key player in the response to international crises.
Fondation de France's international activities have three objectives: to facilitate cross-border philanthropy, to share best practice to develop philanthropy, and to take sustainable action beyond our borders.
Facilitating cross-border philanthropy
Drawing on its experience and unique expertise and with international local partners, Fondation de France contributes to the development of increasingly agile and innovative cross-border philanthropy. Committed to supporting all those wishing to take action, it is now the gateway for all donors who want to support public-interest projects in France. To this end, Fondation de France works with over 300 public interest organisations (associations, endowment funds, foundations, public institutions) to support them in their international fundraising efforts.
Sharing best practice to develop philanthropy
As a pioneer, Fondation de France works with its counterparts in many countries to accelerate the development of philanthropy worldwide:
- At European level, Fondation de France played a key role in the creation of the Philea network, which brings together more than 10,000 foundations in over 30 countries to share knowledge and advocate for legislative frameworks favourable to philanthropy throughout Europe.
- Fondation de France is a member of the Network of European Foundations (NEF), which brings together a number of European foundations that have decided to set up collaborative funds in order to work together to promote action in the general interest throughout Europe. Fondation de France is a member of four of these alliances: Civitates, to defend and promote democracy; EPIM, to address the challenges of migration; JAFOWA, to support sustainable family farming in West Africa; and AGE, to promote gender equality.
- In partnership with Wings, a philanthropy development network in Brazil, Fondation de France is actively exchanging expertise, pooling knowledge and supporting advocacy efforts to unlock the full potential of the philanthropic sector. It is also working with Trust Africa to actively support the development of philanthropy in West Africa, with the aim of improving cooperation between local, regional and international organisations.
- Fondation de France is also an active member of ERNOP, a European network for academic research on philanthropy, and a partner of the European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA), which promotes corporate philanthropy and impact investing throughout Europe.
Taking sustainable action beyond our borders
Fondation de France relies on a solid network of local partners around the world, all firmly rooted in their territories, to build agile, practical solutions to increasingly complex issues (health and access to healthcare, sustainable agriculture, childhood and education, human rights, democracy, etc.). Established by committees of volunteer experts, our programmes favour a long-term approach and projects that directly involve the people concerned to ensure their effectiveness.
This local network means we can respond quickly to emergencies, disasters and crises, guaranteeing rigour, transparency and traceability. Since 2010, over thirty operations and 2,238 projects have been supported in the field following natural disasters or exceptional events (cyclone in Mayotte, war in Ukraine, earthquakes in Turkey-Syria and Morocco, explosion in Lebanon, etc.). Fondation de France has established a partnership with Agence Française de Développement (AFD) . In August 2020, following the explosion in Beirut, for example, the Agence Française de Développement and Fondation de France together raised €2 million. This collaboration strengthens support for local stakeholders over the long term. As well as providing an immediate response to emergencies, Fondation de France's actions are established over time to rebuild sustainably with the people concerned.
